La Rétrospective Joan Mitchell à la Fondation Louis Vuiton

 

Une rétrospective de l’œuvre de Joan Mitchell (1925-1992), artiste américaine ayant vécu en France depuis les années 70 et jusqu’à la fin de sa vie, était présentée à Paris à la Fondation Louis Vuiton du 5 Octobre 2022 au 27 février 2023. A cette occasion je me suis rendu à la Fondation fin février.

Cette rétrospective est la dernière d’une série d’expositions consacrées à l’artiste après le San Francisco Museum of Modern Art du 4 septembre 2021 au 17 janvier 2022 et le Baltimore Museum of Art du 6 mars 2022 au 14 août 2022 en collaboration avec la Fondation Joan Mitchell.

En France cette rétrospective, la première consacrée à Joan Mitchell depuis 1994 (une exposition commune avait eu lieu entre la Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume à Paris et le Musée des Beaux Arts de Nantes), se double d’une première partie présentant un dialogue avec l’œuvre de Claude Monet, même si Joan Mitchell n’a jamais revendiqué cet héritage. Elle fût plutôt attirée par les oeuvres de Van Gogh, Cézanne ou encore Matisse. 
Le dialogue avec les œuvres tardives de Monet, tirant vers l’abstraction, est intéressant pour montrer la résonnance avec l’expressionnisme abstrait de Joan Mitchell mais il serait plus intéressant encore de montrer l’influence de Joan Mitchell sur des générations d’artistes plus contemporains. Espérons le pour une prochaine exposition.

Il y avait déjà eu une importante rétrospective de son œuvre en Europe au Ludwig Museum de Cologne, Joan Mitchell Retrospective. Her Life and Paintings, du 14 novembre 2015 au 21 février 2016.

Après avoir vu et revu certaines de ses œuvres, ma préférence va vraiment à sa production des années 80. J’aime le mouvement, les couleurs qu’elle utilise. Il y a beaucoup d’énergie et d’espoir. 

Dans la présentation de Paris j’aime aussi beaucoup les photos reproduites en très grand format sur les murs où on la voit dans sa maison de Vétheuil, calme et sereine.

Cette rétrospective est vraiment très complète et propose de nombreux détails sur sa vie, son parcours d'artiste, ses oeuvres sur toile ou sur papier. Il y a également des vidéos, dont une où l'on voit Joan Mitchell parlant de son travail dans un français impeccable.  

Une future exposition consacrée à Joan Mitchell est déjà prévue au Palais des Beaux Arts de Lille à l’automne 2024, j’y serai ! 
Joan Mitchell s’était elle même rendue à Lille en 1986 à l’occasion d’une exposition sur Matisse et en avait puisé une source d’inspiration pour une série de toiles Lille. Cette série fût présentée à la Galerie Jean Fournier à Paris en 1987.

Les Couleurs de Joan Mitchell, le Vertige de Yayoi Kusama et l'Afrique de Lauren Halsey

        La première fois que j’ai rencontré l’œuvre de Joan Mitchell c'était dans un livre. Comme beaucoup d’artistes la rencontre avec le travail d’un peintre se fait le plus souvent grâce à une bibliothèque ou une librairie. C’était il y a une dizaine d’années et ce choc visuel ne m’a pas quitté.

Il ne me restait plus qu’à voir enfin « en vrai » les tableaux de cette artiste expressionniste américaine qui  travaille sur de grands formats. Cette première confrontation s’est faîte en 2014 lors d’une exposition présentée au Musée des Beaux Arts de Caen Joan Mitchell, Mémoire de Paysage. La Grande Vallée IX m’a laissée alors une forte impression.

Cette fois ci, en 2019, c’est à la Fondation Louis Vuitton que cela se passe (entrée à 5 euros avec la carte de la Maison des Artistes). Une exposition intitulée Le parti de la peinture et qui rassemble nombre d’artistes majeurs du 20^ème siècle. Pour cet événement, qui a lieu jusqu’au 26 août, Joan Mitchell et Yayoi Kusama sont les seules artistes à bénéficier d’une salle dédiée à leur travail. Pour Joan Mitchell c’est une grande salle, la première en entrant dans l’exposition.

La plupart des œuvres exposées sont des diptyques.

Joan Mitchell comme Helen Frankenthaler ou Clyfford Still est une représentante du mouvement expressionniste abstrait né dans les années 40 aux Etats-Unis. Elle fait partie de la plus jeune génération du groupe et s’est installée en France à Vétheuil près de Giverny où elle vivra de 1968 à sa mort en 1992.

L’autre raison pour laquelle il est difficile de voir les œuvres de Joan Mitchell ailleurs que dans un livre est tout simplement parce que cette artiste est assez peu connue en France et donc très peu exposée.

De telles œuvres témoignent d’un engagement total pour la peinture ainsi que Joan Mitchell a vécu sa vie. Une peinture fortement liée à la couleur avec une expression et un engagement sans compromis ayant guidé l’œuvre et la vie de l’artiste.

C’est une leçon d’envergure qu’elle laisse ainsi à chaque artiste ayant la chance de côtoyer ses œuvres.

Concernant Yayoi Kusama, j’ai pu découvrir son travail grâce au blog de Joanne Mattera. Un blog réalisé de manière indépendante d’une grande qualité et que je conseille à toutes celles et ceux qui désirent élargir leur horizon concernant la peinture abstraite et l’art en général.

Ici l’œuvre de Yayoi Kusama est une salle de taille réduite où les murs remplacés par des miroirs projettent à l’infini les obsessions de cette artiste Japonaise née en 1929 : petits pois colorés et formes phalliques.

Avant d’entrer dans la salle (limitée à quatre personnes) la personne qui ouvre la porte nous demande « Vous n’avez pas le vertige ? ». Le ton est donné. Une expérience à vivre !

A noter également en marge de cette exposition un Open Space dédié à la jeune artiste Lauren Halsey de Los Angeles dont s’est la première exposition personnelle en Europe. Cette installation Too Blessed 2 Be Stressed ! visible jusqu'au 2 septembre plonge le visiteur dans un environnement visuel et sonore semblable à une grotte futuriste regroupant des éléments issus des cultures de la diaspora africaine.

Un bel éclairage naturel permet de se poser et de découvrir l’univers de cette artiste engagée avec les communautés des quartiers sud de sa ville natale.

Eté 2021 : Mitchell, Monet, El Anatsui et Hicks

A défaut d'un été et de vagues sans fin voici, par ces quelques photos, le prolongement d'un été 2021 riche en visites de lieux marqués par la présence de grands artistes.
Les jardins de Claude Monet, la maison de Joan Mitchell, le domaine de Chaumont sur Loire avec les oeuvres de El Anatsui et Sheila Hicks : c'était cet été sur la route des vacances.

La maison de Joan Mitchell à Vétheuil que l’artiste a acquis en 1967 :

Dans la ville aucune trace du passage de l’artiste américaine qui a pourtant vécue là jusqu’à sa mort en 1992. 
On imagine Joan apparaissant à la terrasse accompagnée « des filles », ses chiens, ayant achevé une oeuvre de sa série "Grande Vallée". Le jour se lève sur le Vexin. Joan regarde les premières lueurs de l’aube, apaisée après une nuit de labeur et de combat avec la peinture.

Le Vexin avec ses courbes de la Seine est une très belle région. N'hésitez pas à vous arrêter à La Roche Guyon avec son château et de faire un tour à la galerie T Room



Puis sur la route ce fût le domaine de Chaumont sur Loire avec son château et son Festival des Jardins :

Dans l'escalier d'honneur du château, les oeuvres satellites colorées de laine et de soie de l'artiste américaine Sheila Hicks, née en 1934 (exposée au Centre Pompidou en 2018) :

Puis dans le parc et le château les oeuvres de El Anatsui.

Dans le Parc : 

Ugwu, colline extraordinaire de rondins de bois et de matériaux de récupération (matière première emblématique de cet artiste ghanéen né en 1944. Il vit et travaille au Nigéria et a reçu en 2015 le Lion d’Or de la Biennale de Venise pour l’ensemble de son œuvre)

Cire perdue, trois gabarres levées vers le ciel.
« Le bateau se sacrifie, comme quand on coule le bronze et que la cire est perdue. L’énergie est perdue pour permettre l’existence d’une autre chose ». 

El Anatsui fait référence ici à la technique de la "cire perdue" utilisée pour la réalisation de pièces métalliques dans la sculpture (voir la fin de mon article sur les cires ). La maquette en cire est passée au four pour la coulée du bronze (ou autre métal). La cire est alors "perdue" pour permettre la création de l'oeuvre. Passage d'un état à un autre grâce à la cire. C'est l'une des nombreuses symboliques de la cire utilisée ici par El Anatsui. La cire est également utilisée dans la méthode du Batik pour l'impression des tissus africains.

Le Bel Art de Mahjoub Ben Bella au MUba de Tourcoing

Quoi de mieux pour débuter cette année 2022 qu'une exposition vivante et colorée.

C'est ce que présente en ce moment le MUba de Tourcoing en hommage au peintre franco-algérien Mahjoub Ben Bella disparu en 2020. 

La peinture de cet artiste installé à Tourcoing dans les années 70 reflète des influences, un mode d'expression commun avec les expressionnistes abstraits américains et le dripping de Jackson Pollock. Une référence que l'artiste revendique et cela m'a frappé lorsque je suis entré dans la salle d'exposition du musée.

Le geste de la calligraphie arabe que pratique Ben Bella au début de sa carrière se transforme en mouvement, un espace commun à la musique aux arts plastiques et à la danse. De l'écriture à la musique du geste. Tout est là dans l'oeuvre colorée, riche, vivante de l'artiste qui resta toute sa vie attaché à la région du Nord. 

Il a travaillé en collaboration avec des musiciens et des chorégraphes, inspiré par le Jazz de Miles Davis ou la musique de John Cage (voir les liens entre John Cage, le chorégraphe Merce Cunningham et Robert Rauschenberg dans mon article sur Jasper Johns )

Mahjoub Ben Bella site également dans ses influences l'artiste américain Mark Tobey (1890-1976), dont on retrouve quelques oeuvres dans une autre partie de l'exposition. Tout comme Ben Bella l'art de Tobey s'est construit avec l'étude de la calligraphie (chinoise et arabe).

On trouve aussi dans une autre salle du MUba une autre artiste ayant étudié la calligraphie chinoise durant 10 ans auprès de grand maîtres et ceci de façon rigoureuse et ascétique. Dans son oeuvre la peinture et le corps en mouvement ne font qu'un.  Il s'agit de l'artiste française Fabienne Verdier (1962). Il faut lire son livre Passagère du Silence (2003, Albin Michel) pour se rendre compte de l'engagement de l'artiste pour son art. Un engagement total du corps de l'artiste avec la peinture et avec son oeuvre, que pratiquait Ben Bella, et que l'on retrouve également chez Joan Mitchell

A Few Words in Introduction

The PROWAX JOURNAL was a quarterly magazine for Professional Artists working with Wax and Encaustic edited between September 2013 and October 2018. There was 21 Issues. Maritza Ruiz-Kim was the Editor-in-Chief from Issue 1 to 11, Nancy Natale and Joanne Mattera shared the editorial job of the Issue 12 and Joanne Mattera was Editor-in-Chief from Issue 13 to 21.

Even if I knew encaustic since 2007, my encaustic conscience was born on a day of September 2013 with the first Issue of PROWAX JOURNAL. The most part of my encaustic culture come from the reading of Joanne Mattera's book and my long hours of reading the PROWAX JOURNAL.

I started that project a few years ago trying to figure out a better way to navigate threw this monument of contemporary encaustic history, the only free online publication made by artists for artists. First I did for myself a complete Table of Contents on a Word format. Then in 2021, after the 14th International Encaustic Virtual Conference, I asked myself "Why don't I share that work on my blog?". Three years later, there it is ! It was an important work, more a documentalist's work, a resurgence from my past studies in Library and Information Sciences (a part of my story...). I really had fun to it.

For each Section I mention names of the artists for their works or their words. If the name appears several times in the Section I mention her/his name one time only.

Quelques mots d'introduction:

Le PROWAX JOURNAL est une publication trimestrielle numérique américaine pour les artistes professionnels utilisant la cire et l'encaustique dans leur travail. Elle comprend 21 numéros qui furent publiés entre septembre 2013 et octobre 2018. Je présente ici sur mon blog une table des matières interactive complète de l'ensemble des numéros et différentes sections du journal ainsi que l'ensemble des artistes ayant contribué à sa conception. Cette publication, complètement gratuite et entièrement réalisée par des artistes professionnels, est incontournable dans l'histoire contemporaine de l'encaustique.

J'ai débuté ce projet en 2021 et le voilà terminé ! Un travail important, plutôt un travail de documentaliste, une résurgence de mes années d'études dans le domaine des Bibliothèques et des Sciences de l'Information (une partie de mon histoire...). J'ai pris beaucoup de plaisir à le faire.
