We all know that the Fayum Portraits were painting two thousand years ago with the same materials we are using in our studio today: wax, damar resin and pigments.
Then in the 30's and 40's there was Rifka Angel and Victor Brauner (see references 4) among many others.
But 70 years ago in 1955 Jasper Johns put definitely Wax and Encaustic in a Contemporary way with his first Flag.

Nous savons tous que les Portraits du Fayoum ont été peints il y a 2000 ans avec les même matériaux que nous utilisons dans notre atelier chaque jour : de la cire, de la résine dammar et des pigments.
Ensuite dans les années 30 et 40 il y a eu Rifka Angel et Victor Brauner (voir reference 4) parmi beaucoup d’autres.
Mais il y a 70 ans, en 1955, Jasper Johns orienta définitivement la cire et l’encaustique dans une voie contemporaine avec son premier Flag.
Plus récemment nous pouvons mentionner également le travail de Tony Scherman, Michael David, Marisa Merz, Petah Coyne ou Joanne Mattera (voir references 5 et 6) parmi de nombreux autres artistes. En France je peux mentionner également le travail de Philippe Cognée et François Rouan.

Wir alle wissen, dass die berühmten Fayum-Porträts vor zweitausend Jahren mit denselben Materialien gemalt wurden, die wir auch heute noch in unseren Ateliers verwenden: Wachs, Dammarharz und Pigmente.
In den 1930er- und 1940er-Jahren arbeiteten Künstler wie Rifka Angel und Victor Brauner (siehe Referenz 4) mit dieser Technik, unter vielen anderen.
Doch vor 70 Jahren, im Jahr 1955, hat Jasper Johns mit seiner ersten Flagge das Wachs und die Enkaustik endgültig in die zeitgenössische Kunst eingeführt.
In jüngerer Zeit können wir unter anderem die Arbeiten von Tony Scherman, Michael David, Marisa Merz, Petah Coyne und Joanne Mattera nennen (siehe Referenzen 5 und 6). In Frankreich gibt es außerdem die Werke von Philippe Cognée und François Rouan.

In 1996 there was the first Workshop at R&F Handmade Paints.
In 2001 Joanne Mattera released her book The Art of Encaustic Painting and then in 2007 she founded the first International Encaustic Conference that Cherie Mittenthal and Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill organize every year. (see references 2 and 5).
In 2013 was released the first Issue of The ProWax Journal (reference 7)
In 2025 you can still make your own encaustic paint but you can also buy it to R&F Handmade Paints, Enkaustikos, Miles Conrad Encaustics, Evans Encaustics or Kama Pigments (R&F encaustics and Enkaustikos are available in Europe).
When I started this blog in May 2015 I absolutely didn't know that this simple word "Encaustic" will bring me to one of the most beautiful adventure of my life. What an amazing journey! There it is, 10 years after in 2025, I consider as a wonderful gift all this beautiful artworks that my friends, all professional artists from Joanne Mattera to Petah Coyne, send me for the 10th anniversary of my blog.
These artworks will speak for themselves: Encaustic is more than a medium. All this artists are painters, sculptors, curators or instructors, creating in 2-d or 3-d with wax and encaustic. From Painting or Sculpture to Monotype and Collage… The possibilities of creation are infinite.
In 2025 the professional Art World of Wax and Encaustic is richer than ever.
I'm deeply grateful to all the artists that responded immediately to my invitation for this anniversary. Here is 31 works of art by 30 artists (I include myself in this list, so proud to be part of this encaustic community created by Joanne Mattera in 2007).
So, as Louis Armstrong could sing, “What a Wonderful World” of Wax!

Quand j’ai débuté ce blog en mai 2015 je ne savais absolument pas que ce simple mot d’”encaustique” allait me porter vers l’une des plus belles aventures de ma vie. Et voilà, 10 ans plus tard en 2025, je considère comme un merveilleux cadeau toutes ces oeuvres magnifiques que tous/toutes mes ami(e)s artistes professionnel(le)s, de Joanne Mattera à Petah Coyne, m’ont envoyé pour le 10ème anniversaire de ce blog.
Ces oeuvres d’art parleront d’elles-même : l’Encaustique est plus qu’un médium. Tous ces artistes sont peintres, sculpteurs, curateurs ou instructeurs, créant en 2 ou 3 dimensions avec la cire et l’encaustique. De la peinture à la sculpture en passant par le monotype ou le collage… les possibilités de création sont infinies.
En 2025 le monde professionnel de la cire et de l’encaustique est plus riche que jamais.
Je suis profondément reconnaissant à tous/toutes les artistes qui ont répondu immédiatement à mon invitation pour le 10ème anniversaire de ce blog. Voici 31 oeuvres d’art par 30 artistes (je m’inclus dans cette liste car je suis vraiment fier de faire partie de cette communauté créée par Joanne Mattera en 2007).

Als ich diesen Blog im Mai 2015 gestartet habe, hätte ich nie gedacht, dass mich dieses einfache Wort „Enkaustik“ zu einem der schönsten Abenteuer meines Lebens führen würde.
Was für eine großartige Reise!
Und jetzt, zehn Jahre später im Jahr 2025, betrachte ich es als ein wunderbares Geschenk, all die großartigen Kunstwerke zu erhalten, die mir meine Freund:innen – allesamt professionelle Künstler:innen, von Joanne Mattera bis Petah Coyne – zum 10-jährigen Jubiläum meines Blogs geschickt haben.
Diese Werke sprechen für sich selbst: Enkaustik ist mehr als nur ein Medium.
All diese Künstler:innen sind Maler:innen, Bildhauer:innen, Kurator:innen oder Dozent:innen, die mit Wachs und Enkaustik in 2D oder 3D arbeiten. Von Malerei und Skulptur bis zu Monotypie und Collage… Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind grenzenlos.
Im Jahr 2025 ist die professionelle Kunstwelt rund um Wachs und Enkaustik reicher denn je.
Ich bin zutiefst dankbar gegenüber allen Künstler:innen, die meiner Einladung zu diesem Jubiläum sofort gefolgt sind.
